Is a Domain Name really that important?

A sole-proprietor electrician (let’s call him Dave Jones) goes online to purchase a domain name for his new business website. Darn! JonesElectric.com is already taken. Now what?

What else can he do – what other domain can he choose that will help people find his website?

What’s the best way to choose a name that will work for your business and make your website easy to find?

One of the most important aspects of starting a business is choosing the right name and getting either the exact domain name or one VERY similar. If you haven’t named your business yet, search domain names to see what is available.

Include your type of business in your domain name, particularly if you have a lot of competition in your field. This will help your search engine optimization (SEO) because it lets Google know exactly what you do. Dave Jones should definitely include electrician or electric in his business name and website address.
If you’re an independent contractor, include your name. This will help clients associate your name with the service you provide. You may need to file a DBA (doing business as) or Fictitious Business Name statement. When setting up a new business entity, make sure you consult an attorney and accountant.
Keep it simple! Your web address should be easy to remember. Keep the number of words to a minimum and try to limit it to 5 syllables or less. Again, a short, precise name helps your page ranking with Google.
Choose a name which is EASY to spell. Many businesses have had to change their domain name or buy an additional domain name to avoid any confusion. As with everything in business, the more straightforward you can make things, the easier it will make your life.
